Queen Bee Blog
One of the most common frustrations I hear from clients coming in for a Brazilian wax or bikini wax is this:
They spend the time and money on a professional wax, leave feeling beautifully smooth… and then a few days later they feel stubble or new hairs growing in.
Many people immediately reach for a razor.
I completely understand the temptation. But as a British esthetician and master waxologist who has spent decades working in professional waxing, I can tell you that shaving between waxes is one of the biggest reasons clients experience stubble, irritation, and ingrown hairs.
This is something my team and I explain every day to our clients at Queen Bee Salon & Spa in Culver City, Seattle, Dallas, and Omaha, and it’s important to understand why.
Hair Grows in Cycles, and Waxing Works With Those Cycles
Hair on the body grows in different stages of a growth cycle, which is why even after a thorough Brazilian wax or bikini wax, you may notice some hairs appearing shortly afterward.
When we wax, we remove the hairs that are ready to come out from the root of the follicle, but other hairs are still developing deeper under the skin.
Over time, when clients maintain consistent waxing appointments, more hairs begin to grow in the same cycle.
This is when people start to notice:
- smoother skin for longer
- finer hair regrowth
- fewer ingrown hairs
- better waxing results overall
But this process only works when the hair is regularly removed from the root.
Why Shaving Between Waxes Disrupts the Hair Growth Cycle
When you shave, the hair is cut off at the surface of the skin rather than being removed from the root.
This causes several issues.
First, shaving creates a blunt edge on the hair. That blunt edge is why shaved hair often feels like stubble much sooner than waxed hair.
Second, after shaving, some hairs can retract slightly deeper into the follicle. As those hairs grow back, they may not come straight through the skin’s surface. Instead, they can grow sideways or curl back into the skin, leading to ingrown hairs and irritation.
Finally, shaving prevents hair from ever getting into a consistent waxing cycle, which is what allows professional waxing to produce smoother, longer-lasting results.
For this reason, my team and I strongly recommend not shaving between waxing appointments.
Waxing Over Shaved Hair Can Cause Irritation
Another issue we frequently see in the treatment room is when clients shave and then come in for their next waxing appointment.
Shaved hair tends to be coarser and more blunt at the tip, which can make it harder for wax to grip the hair properly.
This can sometimes lead to:
- broken hairs
- irritation during waxing
- more ingrown hairs
- uneven results
Professional waxing is designed to remove the hair completely from the root, not snap it at the surface.
When hair has been shaved repeatedly, that clean removal becomes more difficult.
If You Absolutely Must Shave
We understand that sometimes clients have vacations, events, or simply feel they can’t wait for their next appointment.
If you absolutely must shave between waxes, my advice is simple:
Only shave the sides of the bikini line.
Avoid shaving the areas that are regularly waxed so the hair in those areas can continue to grow into a healthy waxing cycle.
Your next wax will be much smoother and far more effective.
How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs After Waxing
In my experience, preventing bikini line ingrown hairs comes down to a few simple steps:
• maintain regular waxing appointments
• gently exfoliate to remove dead skin buildup
• keep the skin hydrated
• use professional ingrown hair products (LINK TO OUR PRODUCTS)
Dead skin can block hair follicles and trap hairs beneath the surface, which is why proper skincare between waxes is just as important as the wax itself.
