Queen Bee Blog
If you’ve ever dealt with ingrown hairs, you’re not alone. They are one of the most common concerns we see at Queen Bee Salon & Spa, and also one of the most misunderstood.
As an award-winning esthetician and wax specialist with over 20 years of experience, I can tell you this with confidence. Preventing ingrown hairs is not about one miracle product. It is about understanding the skin, the hair, and how the two behave together.
There is a lot of misinformation out there. Let’s simplify it.
What Causes Ingrown Hairs
Ingrown hairs happen when a hair grows back into the skin instead of up and out. This can occur when the follicle is blocked, when the hair is cut improperly, or when the skin is not shedding efficiently.
Common causes include dead skin buildup that traps the hair, improper shaving technique, hair breaking during waxing instead of being removed cleanly, tight clothing creating friction, and skin that is dry or congested.
We also see ingrowns more often in areas where hair is coarse or curly, such as the bikini line, underarms, and face.
Why Prevention Matters
Once an ingrown hair forms, it can become inflamed, irritated, and in some cases infected. The goal is not just to treat them. It is to prevent them from forming in the first place.
This is where proper education, consistency, and professional care come in.
How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs
Prevention is about keeping the follicle clear and the skin functioning properly.
Exfoliation is essential
Gentle, consistent exfoliation helps remove dead skin so the hair can grow out freely. Chemical exfoliants such as salicylic and glycolic acid are particularly effective when used correctly. Over-exfoliating, however, can damage the skin and make the problem worse.
Hydration matters
Skin that is dry and tight does not allow hair to emerge easily. Well-hydrated skin supports a healthy barrier and proper hair growth.
Proper waxing technique
When waxing is done correctly, the hair is removed from the root without breaking. Broken hairs are far more likely to become ingrown. This is why technique and training matter.
At Queen Bee, every esthetician is trained the Queen Bee Way, focusing on precision, comfort, and clean, efficient removal. It is one of the reasons we have been recognized with back-to-back Allure awards for Best Brazilian Wax.
Shaving correctly
If you shave, use a clean, sharp blade and shave in the direction of hair growth. Avoid going over the same area repeatedly, which increases irritation and the likelihood of ingrowns.
Avoid friction
Tight clothing can push hair back into the skin, especially after waxing or shaving. Giving the skin space to breathe, particularly in the first 24 to 48 hours, can significantly reduce irritation.
Treatment of Ingrown Hairs
If ingrown hairs are already present, the goal is to calm the skin and gently encourage the hair to release.
Do not pick or dig at the skin. This can lead to scarring and prolonged irritation.
Instead, focus on gentle exfoliation, keeping the skin clean and hydrated, and using targeted treatments that help reduce congestion and support skin clarity.
This is where the right product makes a difference.
