Waxing Apprentice New Bee
“There is no exquisite beauty… without some strangeness in the proportion.” – Edgar Allan Poe
I was born strange in a small Texas town. On those back country roads, in a land of beauty queens and debutants, where the higher your hair – the closer to God, I found my purpose. I spent the first 17 years of life proudly shaking up the Lone Star State, challenging beauty standards and pushing the boundaries of social grace. I knew being strange in the South afforded me a unique perspective from which to learn, and though I never relented kicking up dirt, I made sure to soak it all in. I learned a lot about what it meant to be beautiful from a lot of beautiful, strong Texans.
In 2014, I was ready for a change and headed for the rain. Seattle didn’t offer the elevated perspective on beauty standards that I expected. Instead, it taught me that we all face unhealthy ideas of beauty and self. After graduating from the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute, my purpose became a much stronger calling toward education.
Today, I hope to support your discovery of self-care, so that you are better able to make responsibility to self a priority. I am determined to offer people, motivated by unrealistic beauty standards or those who are just unsure of what comes next, a safe place in which to meet themselves and to experiment with their own terms of beauty. In doing so, I hope to help them become comfortable with a self-care routine that makes sense for them.
Skin care, for me, is where we uncover the foundation of identity. An informed skin care routine and being comfortable with your self will empower you to define beauty for you. Beauty is as unique to each of us as we are unique to each other. Armed with healthy skin, healthy habits and healthy expectations we can engage in (the fun) beauty rituals and make impactful statements of self, unburdened by societal norms and impossible standards.
